Week 3 Studio Task 26/03/09

Posted in Weekly Tasks on March 26, 2009 by atlar

These are the four topics that my group has chosen and who’s doing what

a.     Allan-Synchronous Messaging; e.g. Skype, Team Speak, MSN

My team could use instant messaging applications such as google mail which has an inbuilt instant messenger. On the net there are many online chat rooms where users can join and socialise.

b. Philip – Collaborative Document Editing; e.g. Wikis, Google Documents,

c. Stephen –shared Repositories; Youtube, Google 3d Warehouse, Filefront, Fileplanet,

 d. Eva – In our team we can communicate the through facebook or MySpace   leave notification massage for each other or communicate online in the same time.

2nd Week Studio Task 19/03/09

Posted in Weekly Tasks on March 19, 2009 by atlar

1:00pm-In todays class we discussed several meanings of the word collaboration and what uses can come from it.

2:00pm-We went back into our groups today and everyone in our group presented there unbuilt architectures. We discussed the pros and cons for each architecture and found that we had two great structures that we wanted to do. One structure is the underwater hotel called the Hydropolis which is based in Dubai. The other structure is the Dubai Opera House.  After discussing these two ideas with the tutors we had come up with an agreement to go forth with both designs first to find out what was possible using the crysis engine. As the Hydropolis would have to be created and submerged within the water in Crysis we need to find out if water can be held back. For the Dubai opera house one big issue we looked at was the share complexity of the shapes and curves of the structure.

4:00pm-We have come up with 8 areas of inquirey for each unbuilt architecture that we would need to be researched upon to see if the task is manageable within crysis.

For the Dubai opera house the 8 areas of inquiry would be:

  • If design of form and complex structures is possible within crysis.
  • Would need more information of the interior structure
  • If we can import different models from other programs into Crysis
  • If we can model the whole site plan within Crysis
  • If we can get the actual scale of the building to fit into Crysis
  • Scripting would have to be implemented to provide diffierent effects such as lighting
  • The last issue we would face is time management of creating such a large complex structure.

For the Hydropolis the 8 areas of inquiry are:

  1. If design of form and complex structures can be created within crysis.
  2. Test if structures can be placed in the water and to also hold it out
  3. If we can import models from 3dsmax into crysis and test if model collisions works within sandbox2
  4. Test the scale size of creating islands in Crysis and the structure.
  5. Test what materials would look authentic within an underwater environment
  6. Test if sealife is creatable
  7. To test if models can me imported from sketchup
  8. Test if we can import materials into sandbox2

tech tasks will be divided up into 2 per person with the following people doing these tasks.

  • Allan- 2, 6
  • Philip- 1,4
  • Eva-5,7
  • Stephen- 3, 8

4:30pm – In the end we decided to choose the Hydropolis because of the nice underwater visuals within crysis. We indend to create exciting underwater architecture in realtime using the crysis engine and one big element that my team wants to focus on is creating a realistic water environment complete with sealife that will further enhance the ambience of the Hydopolis.

The reason why we decided not to go with the dubai operahouse was because the overall mass and design was quite complicated. And just trying to replicate areas of this into sandbox2 seemed very time consuming. All though the outside renders of the dubai opera house looked very nice and unique, we couldnt picture how the insides of these shapes would work or look like so we decided not to go for it.

1st week studio 12/03/09

Posted in Weekly Tasks on March 12, 2009 by atlar

Welcome to Team ATLAR’s Blog. Our design intent for ARCH1391 Collaboration Fabrication Studio is to create something out of the ordinary that can relate and appeal to anyone interested in realtime architecture using the Crysis Engine.

2:00 pm: For our first week in studio class arch1392 we created a team called atlar consisting of Allan, Philip, Eva and Stephen.

2:30 pm: Coming up with a suitable name that we all would agree upon proved to be a difficult task. After we chose our name we browsed through the course outline and went through the crysis tutorial to get a feel of the cryengine2. While we were going through the crysis tutorial we also discussed unconstructed buildings that we could create for our further collaboration fabrication.

4:30 pm: We completed 4 steps in the indepth crysis tutorial and decided to finish the rest of the tutorial off individually in our own time.

Team Proposal: Our team have decided to choose the online wiki wetpaint as the classes main communication point
